The BEthel ship

The sailing sailor's home

Despite its non-maritime name, Bethel is a larger ship that has previously sailed as a warship for the Navy. Now it sails for the Danish Seamen's Mission. The ship sails during the summer period and functions as a café ship, where there is "open ship" every day. Everyone is welcome on board. There is coffee, a guided tour, a rest in cosy surroundings or a chat about whatever you want to immerse yourself in.

The crew are seafarer missionaries and volunteer helpers, and the approach to the guest on board is the same as we show to everyone in the maritime environment.

We also organise visits/meetings for associations, kindergartens etc. - please contact us if you have any ideas in this regard.

You are very welcome aboard Bethel when we sail around Denmark from May to October every year.

The sailing coffee room

Bethel is our sailing coffee house/seamen's home, which is on tour from May to September around the Danish harbours.

Bethel (Callsign: OXUC, MMSI: 219009763) is docked for several days in a row in different Danish harbours. The crew visits the ship, chats to passers-by and offers a cup of coffee to anyone who wants one, so you are very welcome! In fact, we really appreciate visits from the local area we're in.

There is almost always at least one person present on the ship. So come by and have a chat with someone who has the time and inclination to listen and talk.

Bethel has a large lounge with room for 30 people. Here you can hold the next meeting of your organisation, invite the children's club down or organise other events when we come to your city. Contact us I would love to be involved in this matter!

History of Bethel

At an auction in March 2007, the Østerby Seamen's Home Foundation bought the warship Y 302 Romsø from the Danish Navy. The ship was built in 1969 at Svendborg Shipyard.

After a minor refit at Hvide Sande Skibs- og Baadebyggeri, the ship sailed on 8 June 2007 to its home port of Østerby on Læsø.

On Sunday 10 June, an open ship was invited to an open ship naming ceremony.

The naming was done by parish priest Johannes Christoffersen, a member of the foundation's board, who named it Bethel. It was launched with reference to Ephesians chapter 2 verse 10, which is the motto of the Inland Seamen's Mission.

Ephesians chapter 2 verse 10: For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has prepared beforehand for us to walk in.

Volunteer at Bethel

If you have the desire and opportunity to sail as a sailor or something else, then Contact coordinator Nanna Hansen.

The task may involve

  • coffee brewing
  • cooking
  • Tour of the ship
  • Distribution of Waves and Bølgen and other literature
  • Listen to conversations with guests on board
  • and not least intercession

If you have the necessary papers to sail the ship, you are also welcome to contact us.

You can also help with intercessory prayer without having to go sailing.

You can also help us by bring cake (preferably cookies), potatoes or similar to the shipWhen we pass a harbour near you - there's sure to be coffee on tap if you stop by. Check the sailing schedule and click on the numbers to find out when Bethel is coming to your area. Thanks for any help you can provide!
