I find Northern Lights interesting because it doesn't try to compete with existing youth communities, but has found a new way: we come together to do something!
Northern Lights was an important part of a good homecoming from Greenland. I met people I could share my experiences with and who could speak the same language as me.
Northern Lights is not a replacement for the communities I'm in today. Northern Lights is a supplement.

What is Northern Lights?

Northern Lights is the Seamen's Mission's youth network - and bright colours in the sky, as we know it from Greenland.

Nordlys wants

  • to reach sailors and fishermen with the gospel through various initiatives - and is thus a young version of the Seamen's Mission.                     
  • Creating exciting and active events for members of Nordlys - former volunteers as well as others who drop by.

My activities

Diakonia

Nordlys works with the Seamen's Mission's mission to spread the gospel to seafarers and fishermen. Specifically, we do the following:

  • Cruise mission: Every summer, when the cruise ships dock in Aarhus, the crew members are invited to the Seamen's Café at Aarhus harbour. Here we offer a cup of coffee, a chat, a free Bible and free internet. They especially appreciate the latter, so they can contact friends and family back home. Seafarers are often away for 9-11 months at a time, and some crews live in squalid conditions on the luxurious ships. Northern lights are hosted in the café.
  • Knitwear for sailors: Around Denmark, people are knitting up a storm. Both individually and in communities. In December, home-knitted Christmas gifts are handed out to sailors who dock in the harbour of Aarhus, for example, in the run-up to Christmas and who will be spending Christmas at sea. Scarves, hats and socks that will delight even the strongest sailor when he receives it as a Christmas present far away from his family. Read more here.
  • Christmas gifts: Before Christmas, northerners wrap Christmas presents for sailors and write Christmas cards. Enjoying rice pudding is also part of the programme. The gifts are handed out at the harbours in the run-up to Christmas to the sailors who will be working at sea on Christmas Eve far from their loved ones - a testimony to God's act of love. 
  • The Bethel ship: Helps on board the Danish Seamen's Mission ship Bethel, which serves as an open café ship in Danish harbours over the summer. It is also occasionally visited by seafaring students from somewhere in Denmark. Read more here.
  • Greenland: Help in Greenlandic seafarers' homes in projects and as needed.
 
 

Community

Nordlys is a community for former volunteers in Greenland and for others who want to join. Nordlys wants to be a "bridge" between the returned volunteers and the Seamen's Mission. 

  • Northern Lights Committee: The engine room of Northern Lights is the Northern Lights Committee. A board that plans events, keeps an overview and has cosy meetings 5-6 times a year.
  • Intro day: An introduction day teaches new volunteers about Greenlandic culture, values, history, traditions.... and experienced volunteers/nordlysers give tips on leisure and local opportunities.
  • Recruitment: Northern Lights is an important part of recruiting volunteers for the Danish Seamen's Mission. That's why Nordlys is also travelling to events with a stand that tells about volunteer work in Greenland.
  • Walk´n waterSuccessful water sports camp with surfing, kayaking, underwater hunting, bonfires, worship and fellowship. Several participants come here for whom the Christian community is unknown. You can read more here.
  • Volunteer party: A volunteer party is organised for former volunteers. The last returning team is welcomed back with Greenlandic flags, songs and cosiness.
  • Northern Lights WeekIt's Northern Lights Week when the Danish Seamen's Mission ship Bethel docks at DOKK1 in Aarhus in week 35. There will be concerts, fun, sailing trips, a ship service and other festive events for all Northern Lights enthusiasts and others who drop by.

WlkOnWatr

Wlk on watr is a water sports camp we organise in collaboration with KRIK Denmark. Here we combine faith, community and water sports in a fantastic cocktail.

The first two days you will be introduced to two water (sports) activities lasting approximately three hours. For example, windsurfing in the morning and a sailing trip in the afternoon. Later on, there are more options and often joint activities. Safety is our top priority, which is why we have at least one trained lifeguard present at every activity.
As the clock approaches 5pm and the body aches, a varied evening programme starts with a common denominator of bonfires, games, singing, competitions and space for conversation.

Both Nordlys and KRIK are founded on Christian values. This means that Not, that you have to be a believer to belong; there is a high ceiling - also in a figurative sense. Every morning we start with a small reflection from a life as a believer, and every evening we will sing a few songs together. 

Why become a member?

Cost: 75 kr./year
Benefit: Socialising with other young people, water sports weekends and making a positive difference for other people (look up)! When we receive DKK 75 per person, the state gives us DKK 2,000 in funding, which we can use to organise even better events for members, fishermen and sailors. In addition, Sømandsmissionen uses Northern Lights members when extra hands are urgently needed in Greenland - in connection with management changes, summer volunteers, village projects, etc. So, if you would like to be assigned to a task in Greenland, just become a member.

YOUTH IN MISSION: Nordlys has partnered with Israel Mission Youth under the heading 'Young in Mission'. This collaboration is partly based on a desire to work more together across Christian youth organisations in Denmark, and partly because it gives us access to the Danish Youth Council's funds. 

Become a member: We need your support in the form of a membership. For DKK 75, you're in. The collaboration with Israelsmissionen Unge means that as a member of Nordlys you are also a member of Israelsmissionen Unge.
